"Head...Shoulders...Knees and...SOCKS!"
What's a NUJL(LGBTIQQ)S?
So I am fortunate to be involved with an organization for college students called NUJLS - The National Union of Jewish LGBTIQQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer, and Questioning) Students. The director of the organization is a dear friend of ours, and he called me back in January looking for help with their annual conference. In addition to providing him with a guest speaker and some tourism help, Spouse and I hosted some college students who were in town for the conference. It was very funny because we thought - they wouldn't want to stay with us! We're married with a little kid! But as it turns out, one of the guys we had previously met a month before and really bonded with (and as Jewish geography goes, his mother is good friends with Spouse's aunt!), and the other three were all friends from college who are so terrific we are still keep in touch with them. As the girls left they said "Lets not just say we're going to keep in touch, let's really do it." And we have, which is nice.
It was so wonderful seeing all these students come together from around the US and Canada and find themselves being able to be who they are in the religious environment that they are most comfortable with. They had a jam packed weekend filled with lots of breakout sessions on everything from Jewish history, LGBT issues (on and off campus), Israel, religious texts, they held a rally, and some groups went out to volunteer at a soup kitchen. The other thing we really liked was that not everyone who attended the conference was Jewish - some people came to support their partners.
So we just got an email from NUJLS that they are looking for a new name. Because after all - there is an acronym within an acronym, and explaining it is a mouthfull! I have been stymied on this one, so I thought "Hey those Mindsay people are filled with opinions and suggestions - let's see what they may have to say!" So if anyone has any suggestions, let me know - and I'll pass them along!
