"Head...Shoulders...Knees and...SOCKS!"
Don't look now...
...but there's a big ass white blimp flying over our city.
I noticed the blimp when I was driving into work this morning. I was sitting in our usual morning rush alongside the Pentagon listening to Howard Stern when I noticed it hovering around near Georgetown. My first thought was that perhaps it was in town covering a college football game, but then realized there are no games on Wednesday nights. Then I thought maybe it was in town covering the announcement that the Expos were moving to DC (yay!) but then realized there was no need for outdoor overhead coverage of that. It couldn't still be here from Monday's Redskins-Cowboys game. And so in the spirit of all things accepted for what they are, I finished my thought, re-focused on the traffic and how annoying I find Jim Belushi, and just went back to ignoring the blimp.
I then read in today's Washington Post:
"Throughout the week, the 178-foot-long blimp will conduct
tests designed to determine how effective electro-optical
and infrared cameras are at detecting potentially threatening
movements on the ground." (Stephen J. Boitano - AP)
Hmmm...OK. THEY are watching us. It's rather big brother-ish of the Department of Defense. Who are they watching while testing this out over DC and what will they do with this? It was still hovering over the city when I left work - this time over downtown. If they want it to be inconspicous I suggest that they paint "Goodyear" or other corporate logo on the side of it. Then no-one will pay attention, everyone will assume that they are just in town for some sporting event or parade, and everyone can resumse their normal potentially threatening movements.
