Book report 2007-001
Last year, inspired by Nomad, I kept a running list of every book I read during 2006. (This will be posted once I finish typing it up). But this year I decided to do something different. Nomad and I keep saying that we will start a WTF book club. This is not it (not officially yet anyway). However, I thought that it would be interesting (at least to me anyhow) to write about each book as I finish it. So here we go...
Secret Confessions of the Applewood PTA by Ellen Meister
So I picked up this book at the Library. I will admit that for me I was initially attracted to the cover. (oooh shiny objects!) So I checked it out, but then never got around to it, so I returned it unread. A little later I read a good review of the book in my beloved Entertainment Weekly magazine. So I added it back to my queue and picked up a few weeks ago. It was quite cute! The general premise of the book is that a production company for a new George Clooney film has selected Applewood's elementary school as a sight location for a his new film. The PTA, in particular the Public Relations committee, is in charge of overseeing the process. There of course is a totally bitchy alpha-queen PTA president who you love to hate. The four main characters all have their own issues - primarily internal conflicts and family problems. But I found them nice enough. My main issue was I felt like there were too many characters - I had trouble keeping track of the husbands and kids. But you root for the women to accomplish their goal and to beat the odds that keep getting in their way. And I love the end when George finally comes to town. There were parts when I totally figured out what the big plot twists would be, and other parts that were unexpected. Parts where I giggled outloud, and nights where I had to decide if I should stay up and read or go to bed, but I really wanted to read so that I could find out what happened next. Overall, the book was a nice quick read, easy and enjoyable. If a follow-up book with the same characters was written, I would probably read it.
I give it...3.5 socks.
