"Head...Shoulders...Knees and...SOCKS!"
Pay it forward
Last weekend I went to Borders to purchase some books for my nieces. In addition to the books I got for them, I also purchased an extra book for their book drive for a local children's hospital. I got home, threw the bag on the dining room table, and ran back out to run more errands to prepare for Passover. When I got back home later and went to wrap up the girls' gifts, I discovered that one of the books was missing. I checked downstairs where I had thrown the bag down and didn't see it. It wasn't in the car either.
When I called the store, I told the manager what happened. Maybe the missing book got put in the book drive bin by accident since it was the same shape and size as the extra book I bought? He said he'd check, but to come in and they would give me a replacement copy of the one I was missing.
When I arrived back at the store, they couldn't find the book in the bin. But he was nice enough to give me another copy of the missing book. I told him that if I were to find the book at home that I would bring it back in. I left impressed with their customer service, since they easily could have said "Sorry...".
The other night when I was moving things around the dining room, I looked down, and there was the missing book. On the floor. Just laying there mocking me and making me feel quite dumb knowing that it was there the whole time. So this morning I brought the book back to Borders, explained the situation to manager on duty, and paid for the book and donated it to the book drive. They were impressed with my honesty (aside from the fact that I'm an honest person, what else would I do with an extra copy of an Encyclopedia Brown book that my niece already had?). I was happy to help out a good cause, return the favor for them providing me with the extra copy to begin with and it certainly made up for how silly I felt about losing the book in the first place.
