"Head...Shoulders...Knees and...SOCKS!"
Well I made it through my first Yom Kippur fast in three years (skipped to due pregnancy, nursing, and illness) and I'm very proud of myself for making it through - even with having to feed Child breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. Didn't even lick my fingers. Child was a real trooper - he was mellow enough that we were able to be in services for part of the time. He didn't have a meltdown until - literally - the last five minutes. Why? Because it was past his bedtime and he wanted his dad. We got him calmed down, and went in for the last five blessings. He continues to amaze us with his new words and their associations, and the songs he has learned to sing. And I love that when he plays with his telephone the person he talks to his my dad! My mother of course was delighted when I was speaking with her this afternoon, and Child grabs the phone to say hi to his grandfather - totally unsolicited!
I also worried - again - about my family. I was able to speak with them today and they once again made it through the latest hurricane to hit south Florida without losing power. The screen over the pool that was damaged during Frances was blown away by Jeanne, and the sattelite box was fried. Their Yom Kippur services were truncated - apparently quite a few rabbis were telling people not to go to services if the weather was severe. Members of my parent's congregation were even encouraged to take the high holy day prayerbooks home with them so they wouldn't have to worry about traveling in the bad weather. Now they are all worried about us as Jeanne is supposed to head in our direction. All we can do up here is wait it out and see what happens. This season has been particularly bad, and Spouse and I will be making a donation to one of the hurricane relief funds.
So tomorrow we return back to work and day care, and regularly scheduled activities. And...renewed with the new year...I will start new changes in my life and new beginnings as well.
